Kathmandu can feel busy when you first arrive: traffic, narrow lanes, temples, shops and the constant movement of a capital city. Instead of racing across the valley, group visits by area and leave room to sit down, eat and notice what is happening around you. Two or three days is enough for an introduction, not for seeing everything.
Day one: settle in and explore nearby
After arrival, keep the first day light. Walk around the neighborhood where you are staying, try a local meal and visit a nearby square or temple if time and energy allow. If you have arrived after a long flight, rest is part of the itinerary—not wasted time.
Day two: heritage and living culture
Choose one or two major heritage areas rather than trying to visit every site in one day. Give yourself time to walk the surrounding streets, observe daily life and stop for food. Check current opening arrangements, entrance rules and photography restrictions before setting off; do not assume every site follows the same policy.
Day three: choose your own pace
If you have a third day, use it for another heritage site, a food-focused outing, a market walk or simply a slower morning. Consider a guided visit if context matters to you, and ask the guide to adapt the pace to your interests. Dress respectfully at religious sites and ask before photographing people.
Food, transport and practical details
Traffic can make cross-city journeys slower than expected. Plan visits geographically and confirm transport before leaving. Keep small cash available, protect valuables in crowded places and download your accommodation details in case connectivity drops. Drink treated or reliably safe water.
If Kathmandu is the start of a trek
Do not leave all permit checks, gear shopping and briefing until the last minute. Ask what equipment is supplied, confirm the insurance altitude limit and build a buffer before any flight connection. The Annapurna Circuit Trek starts with travel out of Kathmandu, while the 12 Day Annapurna Base Camp Trek is based around Pokhara. Compare the actual itineraries before choosing.
Frequently asked questions
Is two days enough? It is enough for a focused first visit, but you will need longer to explore the wider valley. Can I visit temples during ceremonies? Follow site rules and do not interrupt worship; ask before photographing. Should I go straight to a trek after landing? Allow time to recover, organise documents and prepare.
