The mountains may be what first brings you to Nepal, but they are only part of the story. Heritage cities, regional food, wildlife habitats, lakeside towns and village life all reward travelers who leave space for them. You do not need to trek for two weeks to have a meaningful trip, and you do not need to squeeze every region into one itinerary.
Culture and heritage
Kathmandu Valley offers temples, courtyards, traditional crafts and living religious traditions. Move slowly, read site guidance and ask before photographing people. A local guide can help explain the layers of history that are easy to miss when you only stop for a photo.
Wildlife and lowland landscapes
The southern plains offer a very different setting from the high Himalayas. Wildlife experiences depend on season, habitat and luck; sightings should never be promised. Choose operators that respect park rules, keep appropriate distance from animals and explain what is included in an activity.
