The easiest way to travel respectfully in Nepal is to stay curious, pay attention and ask when you are unsure. Customs vary across communities, religions and regions; there is no single rule that explains every interaction. A little care, however, goes a long way.
Greetings and everyday interactions
A friendly “Namaste,” often said with palms together, is widely understood. Use a calm tone, be patient when plans change and avoid assuming that a quick answer means someone is being rude. If you are invited into a home or family gathering, follow the host’s lead and ask before entering private spaces.
